Motivation can feel like an elusive concept at times. Even the most driven people can suffer from a lack of motivation.

We’ve all been there before – thinking “If I could just find the motivation, my life would be better, I’d be doing what I want to do, I’d lose the weight, I’d get up earlier, etc etc.”

And if you’re anything like me, this thought of being unmotivated can catch you off guard and leave you feeling a bit guilty…

You see, I often consider myself a “high-achiever”, meaning I’m always trying to do my best, taking care of others, working for that next big thing…and drive and motivation feel like they should come naturally to me.

And at times, they do. But other times, not so much.

Just this morning I was struggling to get moving – I had an appointment that made it hard to plan my day and hard to WANT to get out of bed. And as a creature of habit, not having a schedule down to the T can be really stifling for me, where I find myself walking in circles and nothing gets done.

Bottom line is, I knew if I wanted to be productive and to do what I was put on this Earth to do, then I needed to adapt my schedule and get motivated, despite feeling off my game.

And it’s in these times when I struggle to find my motivation that I realized this:

Motivation is a choice. And you need to make that choice every single day to move closer to your goals, despite any resistance you may feel.

Every day, you need to choose to make decisions that align with your ambitions and your objectives, or else you will find yourself floating through life, and your happiness will take a major toll.

So, what does this mean? How can we find that motivation and MAKE THAT DAILY CHOICE with ease?

*A little something I like to call “future focus”.

Motivation may be a choice, but after struggling with motivation myself time and time again, I like to consider “future focus” that little trick up my sleeve that helps make that ‘choice’ so much easier…

Here’s how to use ‘future focus’ to get motivated in 10 seconds or less:

Who do you want to be? What kind of life do you want to be living and what do you want to be doing?

You need to envision your dream life and FEEL it. Get wrapped up in the joy, the fulfillment, and the excitement that you feel waking up each morning. Picture your view while you drink your morning coffee. Imagine your daily activities and the people you get to spend time with. Think of the freedom you’ll have while positively impacting your family and the world around you.

If you keep doing exactly what you’re doing, living your life the same way as you are right now…where will you be in 10 years?

Will you have the morning view that you desire? Will you have the freedom over your daily activities and plenty of quality time with your loved ones? Will you be making a difference in the world with your work and your life?

If you’re answer to any of those questions in that last paragraph is ‘no’, then you can bet that this exercise will light a fire under your butt STAT.

Visualizing what you want in detail followed by the thought of not getting it in 10 years’ time can feel TERRIFYING to high-achievers, or anyone for that matter. Time is our greatest asset and allowing 10 YEARS to go by without a change and without significant progress towards our goals straight up defies human nature.

We are designed to feel our best when we are growing. In fact, studies show that we are happiest when we are progressing towards our goals – NOT when we have achieved them. Crazy, right?

So if you’ve been feeling unsatisfied with how things are going and finding the motivation to make a change seems daunting…give the above exercise a try and let me know how it goes!

It’s my go-to ‘hack’ to kick-start my motivation – and next week we’ll discuss how to make it last.
