What does it mean to feel stuck?
Maybe you feel drained, unmotivated, or unhappy. Maybe you feel like you should be doing something else, but you’re not quite sure what that “something else” is. Maybe you’re not sure what your next move is, and you feel pinned, as if you can’t move forward.
If any of this resonates with you, I just want you to know that you are so not alone!
So many people feel this way at one time or another, and sometimes this feeling even comes in waves, from the high points and low points in our lives.
For me personally, I had worked my whole life to reach the top – to get this “one job” that I had wanted since I was a young girl.
After years of struggle, I got the job…
…and I hated it.
I hated feeling like I wasn’t fulfilling my fullest potential, like there was so much more that I had to offer the world. Not to mention, the lack of appreciation from my boss, when I was giving my all. I hated going through the motions everyday, and the the pit in my stomach every Sunday night, knowing Monday was just around the corner. I hated living on someone else’s schedule, and missing out on time with my loved ones.
So, after months of feeling absolutely miserable in my work, I quit.
And although I felt a bit of weight lifted from my shoulders, I felt so stuck.
Here I was, I had put my all into this job, and now it was gone and I didn’t know where to go from there. I constantly felt drained and insignificant, like I wasn’t bringing value to the world like I knew I could. I felt like I couldn’t move forward, because I didn’t know how to move forward.
Before I get into the steps, I want you to know that you’re not really stuck, you’re just unclear. And I want you to know that before you can gain clarity, you have to recognize that something feels off. So since you’re here with me, I want to acknowledge you on becoming motivated to look for a solution.
Here is what I did when I felt stuck, and what you can do to get unstuck in your own life.
#1 Make Healthy Choices
I’m a firm believer that you have to take care of yourself to be successful, and to progress. It’s going to be very hard to get the ball rolling when you can’t muster up the motivation because you’re tired, sick, or stressed.
We all know how to be healthy, but that doesn’t mean we all do it regularly. And I’m not going to tell you that you have to suddenly eat and exercise like a body-builder. But, making a couple of small changes can make a world of difference. Try to get to bed just 15 minutes earlier at night. Drink a large glass of water as soon as you wake up in the morning. Try going for a 15 minute walk or jog in the mornings, or after work. Start small, and work your way up from there.
#2 Change Your Environment
A quick walk can help in this area as well. If you’re wallowing in feeling stuck, just changing your surroundings and clearing your head can lead to huge breakthroughs. A quick walk outside, or if you’re able, taking a weekend trip somewhere new can help bring a new perspective.
#3 Let Go of The Past
This one has some layers to it. Sometimes we have things in our past that are holding us back. If you feel any sort of guilt, or shame, or dissatisfaction around something, it’s hard to move forward.
For example, I felt guilty about leaving my “dream job”. How could I leave this job that so many would LOVE to have. But, my guilt became a roadblock for me to reimagine my life without that job. I couldn’t seem to move forward because I was so focused on the guilt and the uneasiness of leaving something that didn’t serve me. I wasn’t focusing on what I could be putting my effort into instead.
Is there anything in your past that could be a roadblock for you? If so, recognize it, and take some time to accept it and let it go to the best of your ability, so you can move on to the things that bring you joy and fulfillment.
#4 Explore Your Purpose
I would argue that not having a clearly defined purpose is one of the biggest reasons people feel stuck. You can have all kinds of things to do, be busy all the time, and still not feel like you’re moving forward if you don’t know where you really want to go.
I believe that we are given certain skills, strengths, and experiences in order to use them. And not using them for what we feel called to do can leave us feeling dormant and unfulfilled.
I love to help people in this area, but there are a variety of ways to explore your purpose. I encourage you dive deeper into this, and really lean into what you have felt drawn to now, or even in the past.
If you’d like any help with this, I’d like to invite you to work with me for FREE.
#5 Take Action!
Trust me, I know how cliche these words sound, but it’s true. Often times, people get caught in the trap of “I don’t know what to do, so I’m going to think about it…and ask for affirmation from everyone around me…until I figure it out.”
A little note of advice,
“Clarity comes from action”
Most of the time, clarity doesn’t come from thinking about things alone in a dark room (though it’s possible). Usually, you need to think, then take a small step. It’s in the actions that we gain clarity on how to continue, and how to move forward.
For me, I started researching a bit. I started exploring my purpose, and exploring all of the different branches of it. I just started experimenting with certain ideas, and talking to people, and listening to and learning from other people who had found purpose in their life, in their work, and so on. All of those things are actions in and of themselves, but then I started taking more small steps, like going for a run in the morning, watching webinars and taking notes, listening to podcasts, reading books, and brainstorming what I wanted my life to look like in 3 months, and then in 1 year. I created a daily schedule for myself to allow myself to get more done in a day. I did all of these things without a clear direction, but as I progressed, I learned more and more about ‘me’, and about what I felt called to do, until my purpose was like an elephant staring me in the face.
Also, get rid of imaginary starting lines. I’m guilty of this as well, but we like to set rules around when we can and cannot take action on things that we want.
For example, “I ate horribly this week, but it’s Thursday, so I’ll restart my diet on Monday.”
Or “it’s December 27th, but I’ll wait until the New Year to start working on my business.”
If you’re waiting for “the right time”, it’s not going to come. There is no right time. In fact, most of the time will feel like “the worst time”.
But there is no time like the present, and starting sooner will only lead to you feeling unstuck, faster.
And if you would like me to help you with any of this, I’ve opened up a few time-slots for us to talk about how you can get unstuck and transform your life.
I will answer any questions that you have, and work with you (one-on-one) to craft a customized action plan that you can use to start living the life that you want – and deserve.
Now, of course, everybody I work with is different. So what I’ll do is tailor your plan specifically to your unique goals and your schedule.
Then, at the end of the 30 minute call, I’ll email you the plan as a PDF so you can deploy it in your life immediately.
And the best part is – this is all 100% FREE.
If this sounds interesting to you …
